President Trump has just announced that he will send more federal agents to Chicago in an attempt to stem the climbing murder rate in the city. The President sent out this tweet Friday morning:
As a part of this crack down, President Trump has sent 20 agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to the city. They will be joining another 35-40 agents who are already in the city.
Violence in Chicago has spiraled out of control in recent years. 2016 was the deadliest year in 20 years in the city with 762 people killed, a 58% increase from 2015, and 4,331 people shot, an increase by 47%. So far this year 1,760 have been shot and 320 murders.
AG Sessions released a statement about President Trump’s efforts to stem violence in the city June 1:
“The Trump Administration will not let the bloodshed go on; we cannot accept these levels of violence. That’s why, under President Trump’s strong leadership, we have created the Chicago Gun Strike Force and are sending 20 more permanent ATF agents to Chicago, reallocating federal prosecutors and prioritizing prosecutions to reduce gun violence, and working with our law enforcement partners to stop the lawlessness.
The task force will be particularly focused on stemming the flood of illegal guns into the city and identifying culprits. For the past three years, only 30% of murder cases in Chicago have ended in the identification of a suspect.
The violence that has engulfed the city of Chicago is sickening. The Democrats have allowed it to get out of hand and people are dying violent deaths nearly every day. Law and order must be reestablished in the city, and President Trump is stepping up to the plate.
